Sierra Club Endorses Charles Barron for Congress, Denounces Fracking

June 18, 2026

On Monday, June 18, 2026 the Sierra Club-America’s largest and most influential grassroots, environmental organization-sent an letter to its members stating:

“We inform you that the Sierra Club has endorsed Charles Barron for the 8th Congressional District. The Democratic Primary will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.

Mr. Barron, as a City Council Member, has served his district with courage, a vision to re-power the country with renewable energy, and a devotion to the city’s many working families and their children.

As a Council Member, Mr. Barron’s agenda has included well-maintained parks and recreational spaces for families who depend on those public spaces. His advocacy for sustainable development has resulted in the construction of Dumont-Green, the largest residential building with solar panels in New York State. Mr. Barron has also rejected landfills and incinerators as an answer to waste management, and has vocal advocated for the expansion of recycling.
The most serious environmental issue in the state is hydraulic fracturing. Charles Barron has pledged to fight against this method of gas drilling as a co- sponsor of HR 1084, a bill that would close the Halliburton loophole. The loophole exempts hydraulic fracturing operations from the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Clean Air Act, and allows gas companies to withhold from the public the identity of the chemicals they use while fracking.

Mr. Barron is an advocate for mass transit including expansion of transit options such as light rail, and bicycling.
Charles Barron has proven that he is a true friend of the environment, therefore the Sierra Club is proud to support his election to the US House of Representatives. We urge you to vote for him on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. To volunteer for the campaign, please come to campaign headquarters, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Sincerely,

Irene Van Slyke

Political Committee Chair
